Meet the Author

as told by Unicorn

I have known Miss Linda for a very long time. My origin came about around 1989, but my story wasn’t completed until 1995 when it became a senior art project at the university. Since then my story has changed many times, but finally on March 17, 2019 it was published.

Miss Linda always wanted to write and did, but she was rather insecure because she had never been instructed. She was eager to learn, so she enrolled in a fiction writing class at university.

She remembers being very nervous when she walked into that classroom and worried she wouldn’t get it. She remembers sinking down in her chair and wondering why she had taken the class. But that was soon remedied by the professor.

He walked into the classroom. If she didn’t know any better, the professor was Danny DeVito! Now, you may not remember Danny DeVito because you are so young, but he is a very famous actor and comedian. He is a small man, about 5 feet tall, and kinda round like a peach, has dark hair and a very confident walk.

Miss Linda analyzed the professor closely…contemplating: Is he for real? He definitely wasn’t Danny DeVito but, wow! He was taller, not nearly as round, his hair a bit lighter but definitely had the walk and seemed very confident.

He went to the front of the class, sat on the top of his desk and introduced himself. His grading system was a bit different. He used checkmarks. One with a minus sign was a D; one with a plus sign was an A and a plain checkmark was a C.

For the class’s first assignment, he read a story and asked the students to write the ending. Miss Linda froze; her stomach was queasy. Her hands shook as she picked up her pen and opened her notebook. She scribbled down three sentences and handed it in, knowing she had failed.

The next class came reluctantly for Miss Linda. She sank into her desk dreading what was about to happen. The professor handed back the assignment. He folded the papers in half and placed them on the desks. Miss Linda looked at it, terrified to open it. Everyone else was opening their papers. They weren’t looking at her, so she peeked.

The day turned from an agonizing nightmare to a dream come true. She had a checkmark with a plus sign! Written below it, the professor stated, “Kinda short, but a really good ending.”

And that, my children, was the beginning of Miss Linda’s career.
